Economy minister: violations rampant in power sector, ministry steps in

83 citations in consumer protection crackdown

Minister of Economy and Trade, Dr. Amer Bisat, on Friday issued a statement affirming the ministry’s continued commitment to consumer rights and its intensified efforts to combat fraud, manipulation, and exploitation.

As part of its nationwide inspection plan, the Consumer Protection Directorate conducted field operations between April 28 and May 15, 2025, resulting in 83 violation reports. Of these, 60 were issued against private generator owners for failing to comply with the official kilowatt/hour pricing set by the Ministry of Energy, failing to install meters, or imposing illegal surcharges.

Other violations included the sale of non-compliant products, failure to display prices clearly, and price manipulation in essential sectors such as bakeries and food retailers.

The ministry reaffirmed its determination to enforce regulations without leniency and urged citizens to report violations via its hotline 1739 or the MoET Digital Services app.
