A non-political and non-security figure

A knowledgeable political source pointed out that the diplomatic focus on Lebanon is centered on preventing the war from spreading to the interior, and looking at completing the implementation of Resolution 1701, leading to the withdrawal of Hezbollah weapons and elements beyond the borders of the Litani River.

However, the same source does not deny the raising of the presidential file on the sidelines of the meetings, pointing out that the basis is being prepared for the completion of the entitlement immediately after the end of hostilities.

The source said that although the current stage may be a security phase par excellence, this does not mean that the chances of the army commander, General Joseph Aoun, are ahead of other declared and undeclared candidates.

He considered that the most important thing recorded through the extension is to ensure the stability of the military institution through the continuation of assistance to it, especially from the United States and Qatar, pointing out that both Paris and Doha tried to take advantage of the extension in order to put forward a third or new option.

As for the internal level, the source said that the speaker of the House of Representatives Nabih Berri is still at his position that Aoun's election needs a constitutional amendment, pointing out that some forces will not repeat the experience of electing former President Michel Sleiman.

In response to a question, the source explained that the concerned parties are currently cautious about entering into the names, but it seems that the third option may be to lean towards a non-political and non-security figure.

As for Hezbollah's position on Aoun's nomination, the source pointed out that the party may not oppose this candidacy, especially since the relationship that has linked it with Aoun over the years, especially in the last stage, was not negative, and the FPM justifications for Aoun's rejection of the presidency are considered legitimate by Hezbollah, especially since Aoun left the House of the FPM, and during the next six years it may negatively affect him.
