Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that Iran has not requested military assistance from Russia amid its intensifying air conflict with Israel.
Speaking during a televised press conference in Saint Petersburg, Putin responded to a question from an AFP reporter, saying: “Our Iranian friends have not asked us about this.”
The comments come as regional tensions continue to rise following a series of escalating confrontations between Iran and Israel.
Putin’s remarks underscore Moscow’s position of non-involvement in the current conflict, despite its longstanding alliance with Tehran.
According to CNN, Putin also revealed that Israel has agreed to ensure the safety of Russian personnel working at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran.
“Our experts are in the field, we’re talking about over 200 people,” Putin said, referring to Russian engineers helping Iran construct two new reactors at the site.
“We agreed with the Israeli leadership that their security will be ensured,” he added.
CNN also reported that Putin called on the international community to seek ways to end hostilities between Iran and Israel, while maintaining Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities and Israel’s security.
He emphasized that such coexistence is possible and said he had discussed these issues with officials from the United States, Iran, and Israel.
“There is a consolidation of [Iranian] society around the political leadership of the country,” he added, noting that this was a common pattern in times of external pressure.
