| Wednesday 08 May 2024

The media office of the minister of communications Johnny Corm announced in a statement that "at a time when social media sites are abuzz with discussions and claims related to the blocking of the TikTok application in Lebanon following its use by a gang involved in extorting minors, it is important for the office to confirm that banning the Ministry of communications for any application, whether TikTok or others, and blocking websites or private applications requires a court order in accordance with legal protocols".

Consequently, the Ministry of Communications is an executive authority, and what is issued by the Lebanese judiciary in terms of banning or not banning any application that the ministry is committed to implement exclusively, meaning that there is no individual authority for the minister of communications to decide whether to ban any application or not."

The office said that "the ministry has the technical ability to stop and block the TikTok application at a high rate. Thus, in the event of a judicial decision in this regard, the ministry will apply this decision".

On the other hand, in order to ensure the proper use of the internet, Corm's office is interested in stressing the need for parents to monitor their children, improve the relationship with them and build bridges of trust, which contributes to protecting their children from becoming victims of such crimes. There are also tools in all applications, including "TikTok" that allows parents to manage their children's screen time and block inappropriate content.

The administration of "TikTok" can provide appropriate training to guide parents on the application.

According to the regulations of the two cellular companies, the minister's Office stressed that "all SIM card holders must be over the age of 18, which makes any violations of Lebanese laws through digital channels the subject of severe legal action."
