Syria: Bassil Calls for the Protection of All Ethnic and Religious Groups
"I think about the fate of the Christians in Syria"
Deputy Gebran Bassil, leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, stated: "I think about the fate of the Christians in Syria, and I do not forget what has happened to other religious or ethnic groups."
He continued in a statement: "As I witness the massacres taking place in Syria due to religious identity or differing opinions, I feel pain and concern for what is happening in a country with which we share a rich and diverse cultural heritage, and we are saddened by the loss of this heritage."
"I stand in solidarity with all those persecuted because of their affiliation or beliefs. I think of the Christians of the East and what has happened to them in Iraq, Palestine, and particularly Syria, as they are paying the price of their dispersion across the territories of their homeland. They do not have their own geography, but have lived throughout history alongside all the components of their homeland and have fought for the project of a holistic state, based on the principle that religion belongs to God and the homeland belongs to all," he said.
He added, "I think about the fate of the Christians in Syria, and I do not forget what has happened to other religious or ethnic groups, but each has elements that protect its existence. The Kurds have their own geography, their own strength, and their own protection, and the Druze have their own mountains, and their protection is clearly assured."
