Geagea: We will seriously consider Army commander's candidacy if publicly backed by opposition bloc
In a statement
Samir Geagea, leader of the Lebanese Forces party, criticized the Hezbollah-aligned "resistance axis" and its allies for allegedly blocking the presidential candidacy of Lebanese Army Commander General Joseph Aoun.
In a statement on Tuesday, Geagea accused the bloc of deceit, stating, "If you lack shame, you can say anything. We had hoped that after all the damage they caused to Lebanon, they might act with more responsibility and honesty. Unfortunately, their behavior remains unchanged."
He argued that the bloc's opposition to General Aoun's nomination has been evident for months, if not years, citing political discussions, media leaks, and communications with international envoys as clear indications of their stance.
Geagea emphasized that the Lebanese Forces have maintained positive relations with General Aoun and were early supporters of his candidacy, without imposing any veto on his name.
In recent weeks, he noted, the opposition to Aoun has become more overt, with the Hezbollah-led alliance and the Free Patriotic Movement forming a "blocking third" to hinder his bid.
He also accused the bloc of deflecting responsibility, claiming, "Rather than openly rejecting Aoun, they spread false narratives in the media, blaming the Lebanese Forces for obstruction."
Geagea stated that the Lebanese Forces would seriously consider General Aoun’s candidacy if the Hezbollah-led bloc were to officially endorse him. However, he called for transparency and honesty, accusing the opposing bloc of misleading the public with political maneuvers.
