The outgoing Lebanese Minister of Energy, Walid Fayyad, revealed the magnitude of the losses of "the Israeli aggression against Lebanon in the electricity, energy and water sectors amounted to about $ 480 million, divided as follows: $ 320 million in losses in the energy sector and about $ 160 million in the water sector".
Fayyad confirmed this in an interview on CNBC Arabia, giving these preliminary estimates. Minister Fayyad detailed the losses in four main points. "With the increasing number of displaced people (1.2 million according to the Lebanese authorities), the cost of heating, electricity and fuel to supply the accommodation centers has been estimated at about $ 33 million to strengthen institutional services in displacement areas. The costs of strengthening the electrical infrastructure have been estimated at about $60 million. The infrastructure of networks, stations and others amounted to about 100 million dollars. The loss of income resulting from non-payment of bills amounted to about 100 million dollars". He stressed that "there is a daily coordination with the public electricity supplier of Lebanon to ensure the continuous provision of services in areas of displacement and areas where citizens still reside despite the aggression, and work is underway to restore the balance of electricity supply".
He explained that "Lebanon benefits from the support of Iraq in the energy sector, because coordination is underway with the Iraqi government and those responsible for the Lebanese file", adding that "the government is working on extending the agreement with Iraq and Lebanon hopes to extend the agreement by at least another year and increase the quantity to two million tons".
In addition, Fayyad stressed "the importance of the demarcation of the border and the excavations completed in 2022 as a major step for Lebanon, but the work was interrupted because of the Israeli aggression", explaining that "the damage is limited because the excavation process has not really succeeded". He stressed that "the United States and the American Treasury are the guarantors of this file and that Lebanon has called on its international partners to "preserve its oil rights".
