Bassil to Russia Today: Lebanon should not have entered the war

Head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, said that "Lebanon should not have entered" the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas Movement, stressing that "Lebanon will not achieve goals from this war in terms of recuperating the Lebanese rights."

Interviewed by Russia Today, Bassil said: "Our consistent position regarding the contribution to the liberation of Jerusalem should not upset Hezbollah. Our responsibility to liberate Jerusalem was not mentioned in the Memorandum of Understanding."

He continued: "We were not surprised by the unity of arenas concept, but we do not agree with it."

Bassil said that "Hezbollah is not the one who decides the end of the war in Lebanon and the south, but rather Israel and Hamas who are negotiating."

On the Syrian displaced file, Bassil stressed the necessity of a political decision to enforce the Lebanese laws.

"The problem cannot be solved by granting Lebanon money to strengthen the army to close the maritime border or by proposing what leads to keeping the displaced longer in Lebanon," he said. "The solution lies in financing the return of the displaced to their homeland, especially that Europe has acknowledged the presence of safe zones in Syria."
