BDL wants to reduce the cash economy

| Thursday 18 April 2024

In a press release published on Thursday, the Banque du Liban (BDL) asked banks and financial institutions to facilitate electronic payment processes, while ensuring that their use is not expensive.

In the same context, the Central Bank called on all merchants to refrain from imposing additional charges on users of electronic payment cards, as this is contrary to the law and it harms the national economy.

According to the press release, the BDL is working in concert with the Ministry of Finance on a project that would allow the adoption of the electronic payment card as a means to pay taxes at the ministry's cash desks located throughout the national territory, after the installation of POS machines.

This approach is part of its efforts to reduce the use of cash money in accordance with international standards.
