Tunisia: Kamel FeKi appointed Minister of the Interior

The prefect of Tunis Kamel Feki, a close associate of President Kais Saied , has been appointed Interior Minister to replace the influential Taoufik Charfedddine, the Presidency of the Republic has announced. President Kais Saied issued two decrees, the first ending the functions of Taoufik Charfeddine and a second appointing Kamel Feki as head of the Interior, the presidency said in a press release overnight from Friday to Saturday.

In office since October 2021, Taoufik Charfeddine, 54, announced to the press on Friday that he had asked Kais Saied to end his duties. Taoufik Charfeddine's wife and mother of their three children died in June 2022 following a fire caused by a gas leak in their residence. "The time has come for me to dedicate myself to this responsibility that she left to me" , added Taoufik Charfeddine

This ex-lawyer was one of the pillars of the electoral campaign which led Kais Saied to the presidency in 2019. The new Minister of the Interior Kamel Feki is also close to President Saied. A graduate in law, this former executive at the Ministry of Finance has held the position of prefect of Tunis since the end of 2021.
