Finnish media revealed that the authorities of the country began to think about the creation of a military base of the North Atlantic alliance "NATO" on the territory adjacent to Russia.

The Finnish agency "Yle", quoting the mayor of the city of Lappeenranta, Kimo Yarva, said that the local authorities are considering the establishment of a NATO military base in the southern region of the island of "Karelia".

"I heard that there are ideas about the airport and it can be used if the Defense Forces want it and I can't say anything about the deployment of the Defense Forces and military units, I'm not an expert", the mayor told the agency.

"Finland's accession to NATO will certainly give hope to South Karelia in particular and membership in the alliance can create a sense of security and trust among locals.
The islands of South Karelia are one of the regions of Finland bordering Russia.
